This painting grew out of a previous sculpture project where I used small acrylic cubes as a base “frame” and mounted a variety of portrait digital prints of myself to the sides of eight cubes. I then stacked them beside and on top of each other to form an 8 portrait cube (See above left}. This piece made a big hit in an exhibition at the Woodstock Artist Association in New York.
Having this basic idea in mind, I then went to the computer and constructed a story-telling scene about setting up a show to present large fantasy totem sculptures to the world. Of course, at that stage, all the images were non retouched photographs or digitally massaged portrait images. The two workers setting up the show were posed, photographed, and placed into the scene to establish scale. I then painted the watercolor shown above, using the computer composed digitized image as a guide. This painting became the genesis of my Cloning series of paintings. “Setting Up the Show” has been shown and won prizes in New York and Conn -ecticut Galleries.
My goal now is to find a client with a big enough ego to commission a large “totem” to display in their family room at their Lake Tahoe, or elsewhere, estate. But, what would really be great is to do the entire family. Imagine, four almost life size totems of mom, dad, and the two tykes each constructed from two to three stacked cubes each about 2.5 x 2.5 x 3’. And think about the many permutations they could devise by relocating their cubes in relationship to one another to express what was really going on in their current lives. For instance, If dad was acting up, his totem could be displayed in the garage for a while or bad Billy’s two cubes could be placed up side down. The ultimate configuration? All ten cubes scattered willy nilly, mixed and matched? You get the idea. Interactive sculpture, like rearranging Mount Rushmore, on a smaller scale.

Framing Note: The virtual frame shown above does not exist and is presented here only to give an idea of how the painting would look framed and matted. We frame all our paintings here at the gallery and can provide that same service to you. But since frame choice is a very personal matter we recommend the customer have it done locally. However we ship all paintings with a recommended archival, three inch white mat around the painting, as suggested above, with archival foam core backing (a $25 value) that can fit into a custom frame of your choice. The Height and Width dimensions shown above are of the “art size“ seen through the mat.
